19th Century Public Toilets In Paris

Around 1850 Parisian-born Charles Marville (1813–1879) shifted course and took up photography after achieving success as an illustrator of books and magazines. Photography was not very popular back then. It had been introduced 11 years earlier. Marville mostly photographed monuments, churches, bridges, and gardens in various European countries like France, Germany, and Italy. During the 1850s, Marville established a reputation of an accomplished and versatile photographer. Around 1862, he became an official photographer for the city of Paris. He mostly took photos celebrating the city’s glamour and comforts, but sometimes he also captured a normal life. One of the his favourite topics were public toilets.
