Amazing Mid-century Photographs of Havana

For many years, during the first decades of the last century, during the presidency of Gerardo Machado, Cuba was the main tourist destination for rich Americans and the playground of American mafias. Socialites, debutantes, celebrities like Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra, and American mobsters came to play in the Cuban paradise. What the tourists didn’t see was the people of poverty like the macheteros — sugarcane cutters — who worked only during the four month season, and the rest of the year were unemployed, and angry. Income inequality and corruption within the government led to the Cuban Revolution, conomic embargo by the United States and the rapid end of Havana’s high-life. Here’s the collection of amazing photographs of Havana taken between 1930 and 1960. Check out how Cuba looked like before the Cuban Revolution in 1953 conducted by Fidel Castro.

Where are all the pictures of the regular people? Or military people? Who cares about these old celebreties of days past? I was hoping to see how the everyday man and woman got along before the revolution.
