Amazing Mid-century Photographs of San Francisco

Parking on the steep hill just below the Mark Hopkins hotel

After World War II, San Francisco was entering a new golden age. People were happy and enjoying all the things they hadn’t been able to during the war. Photographer Fred Lyon, a fourth-generation San Franciscan, explored all corners of the city. Here’s his wonderful collection of black and white photographs of San Francisco taken between 1940-1960.

I was born in St. Francis hospital in 1937 and lived in a 3rd floor walkup on Oak St. facing the Panhandle. I remember the cables and at one point, broken store windows after a quake. As a child, I loved the ferry to Oakland and Golden Gate Park. Sadly, we left in 1945, but at least it was to lovely Oregon.

This retired Sailor enjoyed the pictures. I have been in the city many, many times from 1955-2007. They brought back many memories. Thank you.
