Aoshima – Incredible Japan’s Cat Island
Aoshima is an island located in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. There is a reason people called it a cat paradise. Over 120 cats live there. It’s more than people living there.
Cats guard the marina and “welcomes” all arriving at Aoshima. They beg for food and pose for photos.
In 1945, 900 people lived here, but the population began to decline.
Today at 1 inhabitant there are 6 cats.
Cats have been deliberately brought to the island to cacth mice damaging fishing nets. Over the time, the cat population slipped a little out of control.

The island can be reached by ferry. There are no hotels and large shops, many of the buildings are abandoned.
The island attracts many tourists every year.
