Then and Now: How Technology Has Changed Our Lives
Back in the 1950s, the first computers were cuilt to help resolve a complex mathematical calculations. When “the modern computer era” has started, computers were supposed to help users in the everyday work.
Today, it’s hard to imagine our life without a computer or a mobile phone. We have become dependent on modern technologies. I’d like to share a few then and now shots of things showing how technology has changed our lives. Hold on tight, we’re going back in time!
Back in the 1980s computers were big and expensive. Whereas you used to have to take out a small loan to buy a computer (and build a room to house it in).
Now you can get a decent all-purpose laptop that you can fit in your backpack for less than $1,000.
2. Mobile Phone
If you pulled this monstrosity out of your pocket today your friends would makes jokes for the rest of your life. But back in the 1980s though, having a mobile phone was something. A mobile phone has changed communication between people.
Imagine you are living in the 1980s and you asked someone on a date. You actually had to be on time. You couldn’t send a text or call a person, because mobile phones were a gadgets for very rich people. Today, smartfones allow not only call or text, but also stay in touch with friends on social networks.
3. World Wide Web
Sometimes, it’s hard to believe how people learned before the Internet and search engine websites. Several years ago we reached for an encyclopedia, book or a dictionary in order to deepen knowledge on the topic.
Nowadays, people use Wikipedia, Google or Internet forums.
In the 1980s, your tablet device was a pen and a piece of paper in your note book or the Filofax. That was the way people across the world planned their sales meetings, stored their contacts and kept all their important information in one place.
Jump to modern day and we have a multitude of choice ranging from the iPad to the Kindle. They not only replaced the trusty Filofax. These devices are fast, don’t weight much and with docking keyboard they’re replacing the computer too.
5. Social networks
Before Twitter and Facebook, people used to ‘actually’ hang out in places with other people. And they did it outside of the house.
Now, social networks are becoming more important in our lives. From promoting businesses to arranging a get together with friends and everything in-between. Social networks will only continue to grow in the future.
Not so long ago if you wanted to watch the new episode of your favorite TV show you were held captive by the prime-time schedules.
Now, thanks to Hulu or Netflix you can watch entire season at one time.
7. Sport activities
A few decades ago, neighborhoods were filled with children playing on the streets or nearby playgrounds. Kids played football, basketball, hide-and-seek etc.
Nowadays, most of the sport activities have moved to virtual reality.
