During the period from the mid-1890s to 1914 America witnessed an unprecedented wave of immigration to her shores. People hoped to find a chance for better life. Majority of immigrants came from Eastern and Southern Europe. Most of them experienced culture shock. They had a serious problems with acclimatization in the new reality, far from what left in Europe. Many immigrants came from rural areas or small villages. They never expected giant skyscrapers, functional subway and technological everyday life “gadgets”.

Immigrants entering the United States who could not afford first or second-class passage came through the processing center at Ellis Island, New York. Photos you will see below were taken by amateur photographer Augustus Sherman, who worked as the chief registry clerk on Ellis Island. He was the first person who had contact with newly-arrived people. He was intrigued by people’s background and culture. His photos feature subjects dressed in their traditional costumes or folk dress. Check out the collection of photos presenting Ellis Island immigrants arriving to New York City from Europe.
